SUSTAINABILITY

OUR COMMITMENT

We take great pride in our efforts to preserve and protect the environment.

Our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability extends far beyond the materials we use to produce our wood products and fine furniture. Being green is also about the actions we take in our day-to-day operations to minimize the impact on our air, water, and soil.

We acquire our lumber from small, select mills. All of our Natural Edge lumber is from trees that are storm damaged, windfalls, or trees that need to be removed because of age, insect damage, or size.  Often the trees are a hazard and need to be removed, regardless of what happens to the lumber.

ELIMINATING WASTE

By largely air drying our lumber we eliminate most of the consumption commonly used to get lumber to the point that it can be worked with.  The commercial drying process uses an immense amount of energy to take wet, freshly felled and cut wood and dry it in a matter of days.  Our slabs air dry for two to three years before being put into our on-site slow dryer to get them to the perfect moisture level.  No fuel is used for trucking lumber to and from the dryer and little energy is consumed to heat the dryer.  Not only is slow, air drying smart environmentally, it also yields higher quality lumber with dramatic color and less stress defects.

Natural Edge recycles 100% of our paper materials and cardboard waste, as well as sawdust and chips.  We also run on 100% renewable energy.

CONTINUAL OPPORTUNITY

We continually seek opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the planet. We have made it our responsibility to improve the energy efficiency of our operations, minimize our waste, purchase materials from suppliers whose manufacturing practices are green, and continue to build on our best practices of recycling and donations.
